One of the things that makes humans, well human, is our ability to anticipate the future. We can make plans and take action today so that sometime in the future something else will happen. It's a wonderful ability. Planning for the future is an exciting activity. However, one thing that we need to be careful about is not getting too hung up waiting for our well laid plans to unfold. If we don't watch ourselves we can end up wishing our lives away!
Yesterday was my wife's due date. Lately we've been in a bit of a holding pattern waiting for our baby to arrive. After nine long months we're ready to get this parenting show on the road. It will be wonderful when the baby finally emerges. Despite all the anticipation, though, now is actually a wonderful time too.
We're making sure we take things easy these days. We're reading. My wife is knitting. We're sleeping in. We're picking away at some last minute baby preparations as well.
Our friends and family are checking in to see if there has been any news. My wife and I are sharing jokes back and forth about upcoming baby duties and which traits will get passed on, etc. We're having a good time and we're enjoying every minute of it!
Years from now I'm sure that we'll both have pleasant memories about the arrival of our first child. I hope that we'll think fondly of the weeks and days leading up to the big event as well. It's all part of living and we shouldn't wish it all away in exchange for some future event, no matter how important it might seem.
So when you sit down to make your goals or resolutions for the coming year, remember to have some fun doing it. It's engaging making our plans for the future. Life isn't all about the future though; it's about the present too.
